ch ch ch ch changes

dont worry, nothing drastic, we arent leaving or anything!

We did decide on postponing Rome. For a few reasons, but we found out we couldnt use our miles for the tickets, and then realized that if we added the cash we would have spent on the trip to some money we have already set aside, we would have enough saved to cover the kids school tuition and bus service next year, which is a huge expense living here. So, security in the kids school tuition - a good thing.

We also got rid of our part time nanny. She just wasnt that great, and my gut said something was off, so I decided to take a break from the whole nanny thing and try again maybe after the holidays. It was one of those situations that she did a lot of little things that alone wouldnt have bothered me, but a lot of little things add up to a big thing. Leo called her this weekend and told her we decided not to have a nanny for a while and that she could come by and pick up her house slippers and clothes she changed into when she was here. She showed up today and said "someone called me this weekend and told me not to come in!" I said - uhm, yeah, that was my husband, you met him before, I am sure he identified himself when he called (ok- I didnt say that, but you know). It was kind of awkward. My russian teacher was here and helped translate.
Nice thing about my gym membership is they let me put a hold on it for a few months so the time is not lost. I am not used to having someone else take care of my kids, even for a few hours, so this whole nanny thing is odd for me. But we will see. I will still be able to go to the AWO newcomer coffees with natasha, and book group (my plan is to walk her in the stroller prior to meeting so she will be asleep and will just chill in the stroller while we chat away). Stitch group will have to wait - which is ok. The ladies there are super nice, but I am ok with not going.

What else? So now my plan is to get natasha on a good schedule during the day with her eating and sleeping, so hopefully she will be better at night.

My other plan is to get me on a good schedule with my studying russian, housekeeping (I get behind, then overwhelmed, then crabby!), and then time to do a few things I like, like reading for fun and doing some crafts. I have tons of ideas for crafts, but need to focus on finishing what I have started, and deciding what I want to do - I sometimes have great ideas, then get bored with the project half way through. I also am going to wean myself from the computer. I feel like I am always logging on to check email/facebook/blogs. Seriously so much of my time is spent on the computer (uhm, like now).

Thats about it- I know - boring.

On the russiany side - it is getting colder, fur is making an appearance - odd to see after living in a not too cold/paint throwing area like seattle for so long.
Our grocery delivery place now delivers fresh fish (utkonos.ru). Leo ordered some and it arrived. I have in my freezer a sturgeon. A whole one. It is weird looking. Like this, only for some reason ours has a pointier nose.
I asked leo how to cook it and he said I have to clean it first, then cut a hole in the tail, poke the pointy nose through to make a ring, and then braise it in broth. I am sorry. I am squimish. I dont want to poke anythings nose through its tail.

There is no way that I would be able to do it either or filet it. I like fish but when it comes in filets or steaks as in salmon and swordfish.

i get crabby when the house isn't clean. and i am not on a good cleaning schedule right now.
i hear you about the computer thing. what i do is i set little goals for myself and then get to check facebook or whatever.
i am in the midst of sewing costumes for the all saints party on saturday. you would be impressed! maybe you can actually teach me to knit and/or crochet when you are here in dec? we can have our own stitch and bitch session with hannah?

I feel your pain on the sturgeon front. I made the mistake of buying some fish once and not asking to have it cleaned for me. Fish scales ALL over the kitchen.

I am not the best housekeeper. When I lived alone, I was stellar. I was also 26. Now I embrace the dark Moscow winters because it's harder to see the dust.

Im glad you "canned" the nanny. I said all along if you dont feel comfortable with her...
I know you dont really go along with that nanny business anyway.ie why have kids if you dont want to raise them..
As far as the housekeeping, well, ummm, pick up,pick up, pick up. Then you dont get so overwhelmed.
The fish, ewww, Leo better clean it for you. Its like your neighbor on Mercer Island bringing you the lobster!!!!
I too miss you more than you will ever know, but you know that:)

Since you don't feel that you need a nanny, how about just lining up someone that can babysit for you when you and your husband want some time out without kids or when you want to join one of the expat groups for moms only? Living in the burbs in the US, most Americans do not have nannies but I'd have gone nuts without having babysitters for times when I wanted to go out with my husband, a friend, to to a doctor's appointment, Christmas shop, etc. I don't know if it's possible to find such a thing there though as I know that teenagers don't babysit there like here at home.

Tina - I plan on getting a new nanny - this one just didnt work out so we let her go! I think we will wait until after the new year though.

Expatresse - I have some other fish we ordered defrosting for tonight - Leo told me it is either cod or halibut- he wasnt sure. either way, it is already cleaned, it is getting baked with tomatoes, garlic, oregano, a little white wine . .

crap! I opened the package of fish and I think it is smoked or something! (you want it englishman?) so much for my dinner plans!. . . hmmm, scrambled eggs anyone?

Katbat,
do not throw it away yet. If it is smoked fish, you should be able to smell smoked flavor, it is very good for potato salad. Flake the fish, add some boiled in skin (and cleaned and chopped) potatoes, little boiled carrots, may be some fresh peas(just drop frozen ones in salty boiling water for a minute), some hard boiled eggs, onions or scallions or both, real pickled cucumber, oil or mayo. You can skip most or any part of ingredients, just keep - fish, eggs, potatoes, some onions and the olive oil.

Trust me those fish at the fish stalls at the Russian markets looks (a bit) tempting but is awful when you get it home. I got what I thought was a smoked herring but when I tasted it tasted smoked burnt and watery. Being British "don't you know" we like a smoked kipper with some fried eggs or a smoked Mackerel.

My advice is stay away from Russian Market fish and just buy it in Ausan if you don't mind waiting in line for 20 mins!! Perhaps others know where you can get decent fish here in Moscow? I have not yet found anywhere.

P.S Smoking fish is an art (not that I have ever done it but I watch cooking programs!) but it has to be done well, is not it tastes awful in anything. It can also make you ill.

I have to disagree with Englishman.
I can not comment on what is sold in Moscow stores, have not been there for more than 30 years.
But on the subject of smoking, I have a bone to break. We do smoke things at home - fish, ducks, turkeys, shrimp etc. First, smoking is ancient and still good way to preserve food, second, you always should start with fresh ingredients. And if these simple rules are followed, the results are delicious.
