1932 Soviet poster for March 8th.

say NO to the oppression and babbitry of the household work! (in grey)
Here are photos of posters up today (ok, yesterday, I was a little late on posting):
hmmm. I guess times have changed.
Anyway.
We had a nice weekend. Did our taxes. repaired our broken vacuum. made grammar charts. you know - wild and crazy stuff.
Leo bought me "some kind of dried fruit" What it is is a mystery. Care to hazard a guess?
Ok - so small, round, yellow, small seeds inside like a fig, but smaller, and yellower than a fig. Also I am not entirely convinced it is "dried" more like candied, or jellied. the skin is soft and translucent. sweet - good with tea.
If you know, let me know because I haven't a clue!

I love the poster! If you ever see a copy, please buy it for me. Nothing would make me happier than having it in my kitchen.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I tell my kids those yellow dried fruit are "Russian Raisins". I did not have a better answer and this seems to work...
I wonder if the kids will know.
ReplyDeleteThe poster is interesting, but I have to wonder....who the heck did they expect would DO the household work? Surely even communists enjoyed a cup of tea, plenty to eat and clean clothes on occasion.
I wonder that too, annie - perhaps if both are working equally, then household chores are equal as well. . . . Or just falls on the shoulders of babushka.
ReplyDeleteGooseberries? Just guessing.
ReplyDeleteI love that vintage March 8 poster. It's one of my favorites.
yes - expatresse! I think gooseberry!
ReplyDeleteI love the poster as well, so art deco.
ReplyDeleteAnd, oooh, I've never seen a gooseberry! Awesome!
The vintage poster is great.
ReplyDeleteInternational Women's Day is also my SIL's birthday.
I've never had a gooseberry. We don't see them here in CT grocery stores.
That dried fruit looks like either gooseberry, cloudberry, or buckthornberry for me. I have tried those three yellow berries, though and if you said they taste sweet, then it's most probably cloudberry. Gooseberry and buckthornberry taste more sour.
ReplyDeleteBut, I'm not sure, though... because I can't zoom your pics there.
I guess I am a little late on this post - just wanted to say - love the March 8 posters! Thanks for the pics! :)
